Long Range Planning

The Long Range Planning Committee assesses what the congregants want, need, and expect from the synagogue.  We identify ways to make the congregation a significant part of all the members’ lives, taking into account the diversity of the individuals.  The synagogue must be prepared to cope with change, attract unaffiliated Jews, grow, and remain a positive central force within the Jewish community.

Long Range Planning takes the above information and, keeping our mission statement in mind, forms the vision statement for the congregation.  Plans are formed and executed to achieve the vision.  Finally, our mission and vision are communicated to the members and reflected in the temple’s governance structure.

Membership

At Temple Sinai, traditional Jewish values, spiritual discovery and a warm, welcoming congregation make membership a unique and enriching experience.  Shabbat Services, educational programs, youth groups, and Sisterhood and Brotherhood activities programs give members of all ages opportunities for interaction and introspection.

The membership committee is responsible for recruiting new members as well as providing retention services to current members.  The committee organizes open houses for prospective members to meet the Rabbi, religious school director, board of trustees and current Temple members.  The membership committee also sponsors an annual new member Shabbat.

Prospective members should contact the Temple office at 281.496.5950 or via e-mail and a temple packet will be promptly mailed.

Current temple members are invited to participate in the temple's membership committee.  Please contact Spencer Marmelstein for information.

Publicity

The Publicity/Communications Committee coordinates all articles and advertising for external communications in the Greater Houston area.  Some of these print media include the Houston Chronicle, The Houston Community Newspaper group, Krenek neighborhood newsletters, and the Jewish Herald-Voice.

Articles, information, and photos with names of individuals clearly identified need to be submitted to Ed Stevelman 3 weeks in advance.

Ritual

The ritual committee works with the Rabbi on developing Shabbat and holiday services.  This includes continual reviews for improvements and innovations, planning the logistics of High Holiday services including coordinating ushers and honors, and Bar/Bat Mitzvah training in cooperation with the Education committee.  The committee is also instrumental in prayer book selection taking into account the needs of the congregation.

Social Action

The Social Action Committee revolves around one word -- Mitzvah, Hebrew for Commandment, usually defined as a good deed.  We strive to make our world a better place.

In the past, we have collected donations for hurricane victims, raised awareness of the genocide conditions in Darfur, prepared Passover baskets for MD Anderson Hospital patients, and participated in an interfaith holiday party for homeless children.

Much has been done, but much more remains to do.  Come join us as we attempt to repair our community of humanity whether across the street or across the globe.
